Team Germany: World Cup of Poker V Champions

Team Germany, made up of Georg Geissler, Malte Strothmann, Bastian Wulff, Peter Schmidt and captained by PokerStars Shooting Star Jan Heitmann, are the new World Cup of Poker Champions. Germany beat eight other teams from around the world during 16 hours of live poker, all played out in the stunning surroundings of the  PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) at Atlantis in The Bahamas. The winning team takes home $100,000 for first place, which equates to $20,000 per player, plus trophies and the all-important title of World Cup of Poker V Champions.

Team Germany Celebrate Winning the PokerStars World Cup of Poker

Great Britain, led by Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren, held the chip lead going into the final table, but fittingly it was the team captain of Germany who determined which nation won the title. Jan Heitmann and New Zealand’s Richard Grace faced off in heads-up play, with Heitmann's Q-8 catching up Grace's Q-9 to make a flush on the river. Heitmann acknowledged that his team had some luck along the way, but also paid tribute to his team mates, saying that they had played some very good poker.

Route to the Final

Members of the World Cup of Poker final teams received prize packages, including travel and accommodation at the Atlantis Resort and Casino, as well as the opportunity to play live at the PCA. There, the teams competed in single table tournaments to determine chip stacks for the World Cup of Poker Final Table, which was a Tag Team Event, where Germany were crowned the latest PokerStars World Cup of Poker V Champions.

Teams were made up of each country’s top two Tournament Leader Board players from the previous year, as well as two qualifiers who battled their way through freeroll tournaments. These teams of four were then joined by a PokerStars nominated player.
